Looking for roofing services in Thanet?

Thanet is our patch. Frampton Roofing is based in Broadstairs, right in the middle of it, and the great majority of our work happens within about fifteen minutes of the yard — Margate, Ramsgate, Broadstairs, Westgate, Birchington, Minster and everywhere in between.

Colin has been roofing for over twenty years, fifteen of those specialising in fibreglass. That's a long time working on one stretch of coast, and it means we know what Thanet roofs do. We know which estates have the failing felt garage roofs, which seafront terraces hide parapet gutters, and what a north-easterly does to a ridge line.

If you're anywhere on the Isle, we're local to you.

Why Thanet is hard on roofs

Thanet was an island until the Wantsum Channel silted up, and it still behaves like one. It sticks out into the North Sea at the far corner of Kent with water on three sides, which means there is no direction the weather can come from that something isn't fully exposed to. Margate takes the northerlies off the estuary, Broadstairs and Ramsgate take the easterlies off the open sea, and the whole peninsula gets salt carried inland on the wind.

Salt is the part people underestimate. It corrodes nails, screws and flashings, eats into ironwork, and shortens the life of anything metal on a roof by years compared with the same house twenty miles inland. We routinely replace fixings in Thanet that would still be sound in Canterbury.

The building stock adds to it. The seaside towns are full of Victorian and Edwardian property built for a resort trade — tall, steep, slate, with parapets and hidden gutters. Behind them sit the inter-war and post-war estates, mostly concrete tile, and behind those a very large number of flat-roofed garages, dormers, extensions and outbuildings added between the sixties and the eighties. Those flat roofs are now at or past the end of their lives, which is why fibreglass has become such a big part of what we do.
