Flat Roofs Done Right: Recent Work Across Thanet

At Frampton Roofing, we’ve just wrapped up a busy month installing new fibreglass flat roofs across Broadstairs, Margate, and Ramsgate. Whether it’s a garage needing better weather protection or a room brightened up with a skylight, we’ve handled it.

Below, I’ll talk you through what we’ve been up to, highlight some common roofing issues, and share advice on keeping your flat roof in great shape. Throughout the post, I’ll reference some project photos—you’ll see fibreglass being laid smoothly, neat finishes around skylights, and completed roofs ready to withstand years of British weather.

Why Choose Fibreglass for Your Flat Roof?

Fibreglass flat roofs—also known as GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic)—are becoming the go-to choice for local homeowners. Here’s why:

  • Long Life: A properly installed fibreglass roof can last over 20 years.
  • Weatherproof: Seamless installation means no joins for water to sneak through—ideal in coastal weather.
  • Low Maintenance: Unlike felt or older systems, fibreglass requires very little upkeep.
  • Great Finish: It looks smart and can be fitted neatly around skylights, pipes, or roof edges.

Insurance-Backed Guarantees – Peace of Mind

All our fibreglass roofs come with a 20-year guarantee backed by Lloyd’s of London. That means if something goes wrong, you’re covered—not just by us, but by one of the most respected names in insurance. You’ll receive paperwork for your records for complete peace of mind.

Common Flat Roofing Problems We Fix

Even a small leak or sag can lead to bigger, more expensive problems. Some of the most common issues we see across Thanet include:

  • 🌀 Pooling Water: If a flat roof isn’t laid with a proper slope, water pools and seeps into the surface. We install fibreglass roofs to a gentle pitch so rainwater runs off properly.
  • 💥 Cracked or Blistered Felt: Older felt roofs crack, lift or bubble with age. These weak spots let water in and cause internal damp.
  • 🔧 Poor Flashing: Flashing—where the roof meets a wall or skylight—is a common leak point. We use fibreglass to seal those areas watertight, with no vulnerable edges.

How Do We Install a Fibreglass Roof? Step-by-Step

Not everyone knows what actually goes into a proper fibreglass roof. Here’s our typical process:

  1. Strip the Old Roof
  2. We remove all old felt, moss, damaged boards, and any signs of rot or leaks.
  3. Lay New Boards
  4. We install strong, moisture-resistant OSB decking to create a solid, stable base.
  5. Apply Resin & Matting
  6. We brush mixed resin over the boards and lay chopped strand matting into it. This creates the fibreglass layer.
  7. Add the Topcoat
  8. Once cured, we sand the surface lightly and apply a coloured resin topcoat for a watertight, UV-resistant finish.
  9. Add Finishing Touches
  10. Skylights, pipes, vents, and edges are carefully trimmed and sealed with custom fibreglass trims.
  11. Issue Your Guarantee
  12. Once finished, you receive your 20-year Lloyd’s-backed guarantee for peace of mind.

Thinking About a Skylight? Here’s What to Consider

Flat roofs are a brilliant place for a skylight—perfect for bringing in natural light to extensions or darker rooms. But installation has to be watertight.

We use special fibreglass trims that snugly fit around the skylight, then seal it in with resin. The result? No water ingress, no lost heat—just a bright, warm, dry space.

Image Reference: Notice in the fourth image, the crisp edge where the fibreglass meets the skylight—it’s flush, so rainwater will run off smoothly instead of sneaking underneath.

Simple Tips to Look After Your Flat Roof

Even a premium fibreglass roof benefits from a little occasional care:

  • 🍂 Clear Off Debris
  • Remove leaves, twigs or moss after storms so water drains freely.
  • 🔍 Check Inside for Signs
  • Water marks or peeling paint on ceilings can be early warning signs of leaks.
  • 🧹 Unblock Gutters
  • Keep them clean so water flows away instead of backing up onto the roof.

The team at Frampton Roofing recently completed a large-scale industrial roofing project at the Flambeau warehouse and manufacturing facility in Ramsgate . This enormous roof had seen years of wear and was in urgent need of attention to prevent further deterioration. From moss-choked valleys to cracked sheeting and overgrown drainage systems, this was a serious clean-up and repair mission—executed while keeping the busy site operational throughout. The Challenge Flambeau’s factory spans a huge footprint, with long, pitched valley roofs running the length of the site. Over time, the central valleys had become overrun with: 🟢 Thick moss and vegetation growth 💧 Standing water due to blocked or sagging drainage ⚠️ Cracked and damaged sheeting along the valley lines 🌧️ Increased risk of leaks and pooling during heavy rain The goal was to restore effective drainage, clear debris, and repair visible damage—ensuring the roof would perform safely over the winter months and beyond.
