Ramsgate has given us some of our most interesting work. It's a town with a Royal Harbour, sweeping Regency crescents, a working industrial estate and a lot of ordinary family housing in between — and we've been on roofs across all of it.

In the last couple of years alone we've done a major refurbishment at the Flambeau factory, put Dame Janet School back together after lead thieves stripped it, and completed full domestic re-roofs. Commercial or residential, listed or 1960s, the approach doesn't change.

Major roof refurbishment at the Flambeau factory

The Flambeau factory in Ramsgate needed a serious roof refurbishment — a large industrial roof, plant to work around, and a building that had to keep running while we did it.

Commercial work like this is a different discipline to domestic roofing. The areas are bigger, the details are more complicated, and the consequences of getting a detail wrong are measured in production downtime rather than a damp patch on a ceiling. It needs planning, sequencing and a crew that knows what it's doing.

We've also worked on Dame Janet School in Ramsgate, replacing flashings and fitting a fibreglass tray after lead thieves stripped the roof and left the building taking water.

My house is in a conservation area. Does that change what you can do?

Yes, and it's worth knowing before you get quotes. In a conservation area the replacement materials generally have to match what's already there — so a slate roof goes back as slate, not as a cheaper concrete tile. That affects the price, and any quote that's dramatically lower than the others is worth questioning on exactly this point. We work across the Ramsgate conservation areas regularly and will price it properly.

Do you take on commercial roofs?

We do, and it's a genuine part of our work rather than something we dabble in. We've completed a major refurbishment at the Flambeau factory and repair work at Dame Janet School. Large flat areas, plant and ductwork to work around, and sequencing so the building can keep operating — that's all normal for us.

There's damp inside but the roof looks fine from the street. What now?

On the older Ramsgate terraces this usually points at a box or parapet gutter behind the front wall, which you simply can't see from ground level. Getting the roof properly inspected is the quickest way to find out without putting a scaffold up on the off-chance.

Can you match old slate?

Yes. We salvage and grade what's sound and make the shortfall up with matched reclaimed slate. On a Regency terrace that matters — a patch of obviously new slate on an old roof is something you'll look at for the next thirty years.
