Guttering, Fascias & Soffits

Guttering is the least interesting part of a roof and one of the most consequential. Its entire job is to catch everything the roof sheds and take it away from the building. When it stops doing that, the water goes down the wall instead — and a wall that's repeatedly soaked will eventually let damp through, rot the timber behind the fascia, and take the paint off inside.

It's also the cheapest problem on this page to fix and the one people leave longest.

We repair, clear and replace guttering, fascias and soffits right across Thanet and East Kent, including the hidden parapet and box gutters on older properties that most firms would rather not go near.

What we do

  • Gutter clearing — leaves, moss and grit. The single most effective bit of roof maintenance there is, and the most neglected.
  • Repairs — re-sealing joints, replacing failed sections, re-supporting runs that have sagged between brackets.
  • Full replacement — new guttering, downpipes and outlets, laid to a proper fall.
  • Fascias — the board behind the gutter. Once water has been running behind the gutter for a few years, the fascia is usually part of the problem.
  • Soffits — the underside board. Rot here often means water has been getting in for a long time, and it's also where birds and wasps get into a roof space.
  • Bargeboards and verge detailing.
  • Parapet and box gutters — the lead-lined gutters hidden behind the front wall of Georgian and Victorian buildings. Common in Deal, Ramsgate, Margate and Westgate, and a frequent source of serious damp.
  • Rainwater outlets and hoppers — including on commercial and flat roofs.

How we do it

We work out why it failed. Replacing guttering that overflows because the fall is wrong, without correcting the fall, just gets you new guttering that overflows. Sagging, blockages, wrong-sized downpipes and outlets in the wrong place all cause the same symptom and need different fixes.

We check what's behind it. If water has been running down the fascia for years, there's often rot in the board and sometimes in the rafter feet behind it. We'd rather find that with the gutter off than leave you to discover it later.

We support long runs properly. Bungalows and single-storey extensions — of which there are a great many in Birchington, Herne Bay and across Thanet — have long gutter runs that sag over time if the bracket spacing isn't right. More brackets, correctly set to fall.

We take parapet gutters seriously. These are lead-lined, hidden from the street, and when they fail the water goes into the building rather than off it. They need proper leadwork, not a bucket of bitumen paint. On a Georgian terrace this is often the difference between a dry building and a very expensive problem.

We'll clear rather than replace where clearing is the answer. Plenty of guttering we're called to look at just needs cleaning out.

A full re-roof in Botany, Broadstairs

One of our recent Broadstairs jobs was a full re-roof in Botany, and it's a good example of what doing the job properly actually involves.

A re-roof isn't just the tiles you can see from the street. We stripped it back, fitted a breathable membrane, sorted the timber, re-tiled, rebuilt the ridges and dealt with the lead detailing. The property also had a flat-roof dormer and a new VELUX roof window fitted, so the flat and pitched elements had to tie together cleanly and stay watertight where they meet — which is exactly where a lot of roofs let water in.

It's finished, and the home underneath it is protected for decades to come.
