Herne Bay sits on the north Kent coast facing straight out across the Thames Estuary, and it's a town we've worked in for years. It's an easy run for us from Broadstairs and the roofing problems are ones we know well — wind, salt, and a lot of ageing flat roofs.

What we see on Herne Bay roofs
Herne Bay faces north, which is the thing that catches people out. Southern-facing roofs get sun and dry out. North-facing coastal roofs stay damp for longer, grow more moss and algae, and take the estuary wind head-on with nothing between them and the water. Ridge tiles, hip tiles and anything at an exposed edge come loose here far more often than they should.
The housing runs from Victorian seafront terraces and the older streets near the pier through to extensive inter-war and post-war development — and Herne Bay has a particularly high proportion of bungalows. Bungalows are their own thing: large roof area relative to the building, long shallow runs of guttering, and very often a flat-roofed extension or garage attached. When a bungalow roof leaks there's no loft void above to catch it before it reaches the ceiling.
