Flat & Fibreglass Roofing

Flat roofs have a bad reputation in this country, and most of the time it's deserved — but it's the roof that's at fault, not the shape. A felt roof laid in the eighties was never going to last forever. It sits there soaking up sun and frost, the joints work loose, water gets in, and eventually you're looking at a stain on the ceiling and wondering how much this is going to cost.

Fibreglass is our answer to that, and it's what we've built the business on. Colin has been working with specialist fibreglass for fifteen years — out of more than twenty in roofing altogether — and it's the system we fit more than any other across Broadstairs, Margate, Ramsgate and the rest of Thanet.

Done properly, a fibreglass flat roof has no seams and no joints for water to find. It's laid as a liquid and cured in place, so it becomes one continuous waterproof skin over the whole roof, up the upstands and into the trims. That's why we're happy to put our personal 20-year guarantee behind it.

What's included

When we quote a fibreglass flat roof, we quote the whole job. There are no surprises halfway through and no extras appearing on the final bill.

Stripping the old roof — the existing felt, asphalt or failed GRP comes off completely. We don't lay new over old and hope for the best.
Checking and replacing the deck — once it's stripped we can see the timber. If the joists or decking are soft or rotten, we tell you and we replace them. This is the part that gets skipped by people quoting cheap.
New deck boards — laid to a proper fall so water actually runs off rather than pooling.
Trims and upstands — GRP edge trims, drip trims and upstands fitted where they need to be, so the water is directed off the roof and not behind the fascia.
The fibreglass laminate — chopped strand glass fibre matting bonded with polyester resin, rolled out to remove air and consolidate the layer.
Fire-retardant topcoat — the finished, coloured, UV-stable surface. Choose your colour; most people go for dark grey.
Clearing up — the old roof goes away with us. Your driveway looks like we were never there.

How we do it

A fibreglass roof is only as good as the day it was laid, so the process matters more than the materials.

We wait for the right weather. Resin needs dry conditions and a sensible temperature to cure properly. If it's wet or it's about to be, we don't start. We'd rather move you back a few days than lay a roof that's compromised before it's finished. It's one of the reasons we book flat roofs into spring and summer where we can.

We strip it back and look at the timber. Nearly every flat roof we take off has something underneath that needs attention — a soft board, a joist that's been wet for years, a fall that was never right. We'd rather find it now.

We get the falls right. Standing water is what kills flat roofs. If the original deck was laid flat or has sagged, we correct it with firrings so the water runs to the outlet.

We laminate in one continuous piece. The matting and resin go down together and are rolled out properly to drive out air. Trapped air is what causes blisters a few years down the line. There are no seams, no laps and no joints anywhere on the finished roof.

We finish with the topcoat and check the details. The edges, upstands, outlets and any junction with a wall or pitched roof are where leaks actually start. That's where we spend the time.

One of our recent Broadstairs jobs was a full re-roof in Botany, and it's a good example of what doing the job properly actually involves.

A re-roof isn't just the tiles you can see from the street. We stripped it back, fitted a breathable membrane, sorted the timber, re-tiled, rebuilt the ridges and dealt with the lead detailing. The property also had a flat-roof dormer and a new VELUX roof window fitted, so the flat and pitched elements had to tie together cleanly and stay watertight where they meet — which is exactly where a lot of roofs let water in.

It's finished, and the home underneath it is protected for decades to come.
