Frampton Roofing does a Chimney Makeover

Flaunching and fibreglassing!

Original post 26 Nov 2022. Updated 10 Aug 2024

At Frampton Roofing, we know that a good roof does more than just sit there looking pretty—it plays a crucial part in keeping your home snug and dry. This month, we rolled up our sleeves for some top-notch chimney work. Let’s dive into the nitty-gritty of our latest adventure in chimney renovation.

What’s the Deal with Chimney Flaunching?

First off, let’s talk about chimney flaunching. Not the most common topic over tea, sure, but super important. Flaunching is just a fancy term for slapping a strong mortar mix around the chimney pots to keep them in place and stop water from throwing a party in your chimney. We use a trusty 3:1 sand to cement mix, which is basically like giving your chimney an umbrella.

New Cowls and a Snazzy Pot

Moving on, we added some shiny new cowls and a posh new pot perfect for a log burner. Cowls are those little hats for chimneys that keep out birds and rain—nobody wants an uninvited feathered guest or a water feature in their fireplace! And the new chimney pot isn’t just functional; it looks pretty smart too.

A Bit About Fibreglassing

We didn’t stop there. We also fibreglassed the chimney flashings to make them waterproof. Think of it as putting a raincoat on your chimney—a really tight one that stops any water from sneaking in.

Why Bother with All This?

You might wonder why all this fuss about chimneys. Well, keeping your chimney in tip-top shape stops bigger, pricier problems down the road. Think of it as an MOT for your chimney—regular check-ups can save you a headache later.

The team at Frampton Roofing recently completed a large-scale industrial roofing project at the Flambeau warehouse and manufacturing facility in Ramsgate . This enormous roof had seen years of wear and was in urgent need of attention to prevent further deterioration. From moss-choked valleys to cracked sheeting and overgrown drainage systems, this was a serious clean-up and repair mission—executed while keeping the busy site operational throughout. The Challenge Flambeau’s factory spans a huge footprint, with long, pitched valley roofs running the length of the site. Over time, the central valleys had become overrun with: 🟢 Thick moss and vegetation growth 💧 Standing water due to blocked or sagging drainage ⚠️ Cracked and damaged sheeting along the valley lines 🌧️ Increased risk of leaks and pooling during heavy rain The goal was to restore effective drainage, clear debris, and repair visible damage—ensuring the roof would perform safely over the winter months and beyond.
