This one was a flat roof we got finished in Percy Avenue, Broadstairs — a narrow channel running between the stone parapet and the side of the house, tucked in next to a balustrade and a pyracantha hedge. The old surface underneath was tired concrete, cracked and past its best, with nowhere good for water to go once it got in. We boarded straight over it, built the upstand up higher where it meets the wall, and finished the whole run in fibreglass.
Boarding Over and Raising the Upstand
The existing concrete base had done its job for a long time, but it wasn't giving the roof a sound, flat surface to work from any more. We boarded straight over the top of it, which gives a solid, even deck and means we're not relying on decades-old concrete to keep doing the hard work.
Where the roof meets the house wall is always the part that catches people out — it's the junction where water backs up and starts creeping behind the render if the upstand isn't tall enough. So we built that upstand up higher than the original, boarded it in, and got the fibreglass matting laid and bedded in before the resin went off.
Fibreglassing It Watertight
With the matting bedded in and wetted out, the top coat goes on in one continuous skin — up the new upstand, along the base, and right into the corner against the wall. No joints, no seams for water to find a way through. In a channel this narrow and this hemmed in, that's really the only way to do it properly.
Once it's cured you've got a single, gently finished surface running the length of the roof, shedding water cleanly down to where it's supposed to go instead of pooling against the wall.
Built to Last
Every fibreglass roof we lay comes with our personal 20-year guarantee, no matter how small or awkward the job — this little channel included. It's not an add-on, it's just what you get when it's boarded, built up and finished properly in the first place.
If you've got a flat roof, gutter or an awkward little channel like this one giving you grief, get in touch for a look. No obligation, no sales patter — just an honest assessment of what it actually needs.
