We were recently called out to help an elderly lady who had hired a roofer she found on one of the biggest trade checker websites in the UK. He had dozens of glowing 5-star reviews and promised professional repairs. Sadly, what she got was shoddy, unsafe, and downright dangerous.

From the outside, things looked okay—but it only took one heavy storm to reveal the truth. Water came pouring through the ceiling. When we inspected the roof, the extent of the poor workmanship was immediately clear:
- Loose and missing tiles, with gaps left completely open to the elements
- Exposed timbers and rotting supports
- Unsealed flashing and some of the worst lead work we’ve ever seen
- Ripped and poorly applied felt offering no real protection
- Zero waterproofing integrity in several key areas
This wasn’t just careless—it was negligent. The photos speak for themselves:
We’ve now made the roof safe and watertight, but the situation should never have happened. It’s a frustrating reminder that even platforms full of 5-star reviews aren’t immune to abuse—and sadly, rogue traders know how to game the system.
A Few Tips to Protect Yourself or Someone Vulnerable:
✅ Check for more than just online reviews – ask for recent local references, ideally from people you know or trust
✅ Look for memberships and trade credentials – like NFRC, TrustMark, or other recognised trade bodies
✅ Ask for before and after photos of previous work
✅ Be cautious of anyone who can “start tomorrow” and those who demand full payment upfront
✅ Talk to friends, neighbours, or family before committing
✅ Make sure they show you the work before paying
This lovely lady was fortunate to have family nearby who noticed something wasn’t right and called us in to help. But not everyone has that safety net. If you know someone elderly or vulnerable who’s planning work on their home, a quick conversation now might save them a lot of stress—and money—later.
We're always happy to offer advice or take a quick look if something doesn’t feel right. No pressure, no obligation. Just honest guidance.
